Hey! My name is Marley and this is my health advice blog. Maintaining your health is easy when you are young. However, as you get older, you may develop illnesses and disorders as a result of your lifestyle choices. When I hit the age of 50 years old, I suddenly realised that I had a lot of problems which I had been ignoring for a long time. I decided to visit my doctor and seek help. Over the past year, I have worked closely with my doctor to improve my lifestyle and my health. I hope my blog inspires you to do the same.

Why Choose Veneers Over Crowns to Fix Cosmetic Issues?

Grace Henderson

When you want to correct the appearance of your teeth, veneers are a common treatment method. However, some people are confused about the difference between veneers and crowns, and some even think that crowns will be a more suitable option for correcting cosmetic issues. However, this is not the case.

Firstly, veneers and crowns share some similarities but are still very different. Both are usually made from porcelain, and both are fitted to the teeth. However, veneers only cover the front of the tooth. With a crown, the entire tooth is encased. Here's why veneers should be chosen over crowns for cosmetic work.

Veneers Are More Conservative

When dentists talk about how conservative a dental procedure is, they mean how much natural tooth is trimmed away. With a crown, a very large portion of the upper tooth needs to be removed in order to accommodate the addition of a crown. In fact, teeth beneath crowns look more like nubs. Veneers still generally require some tooth structure to be removed, but they are a lot thinner than crowns. As such, less of your natural tooth needs to be trimmed away. In fact, veneers can sometimes be fitted without any tooth structure being removed.

If you're mostly concerned with aesthetics, trimming away as little as possible is always for the best. The natural structure of your tooth helps stimulate the bone below, and losing more of your tooth structure can make sensitivity issues more of a problem.

However, the most important issue is that any decay or infection that occurs will be able to reach the sensitive tooth pulp more easily, which could result in the need for an extraction. Of course, crowns do provide some protection, but they can still crack to let in plaque, bacteria, and food debris.

Transforms Your Smile

If you want to have a smile makeover, veneers are ideal. Even though they only cover half of your teeth, that half is the one people actually see. If you have any chipped or broken teeth, gaps, misalignment, or discoloration, veneers can completely transform the way you look. Technically, crowns can do the same. However, crowns are generally fitted over just one or two problem teeth rather than across both rows. Having each tooth ground down to accommodate a full set of crowns is clearly not a good idea unless each one of those teeth happens to be badly decayed.
