Marley's Health Advice

Hey! My name is Marley and this is my health advice blog. Maintaining your health is easy when you are young. However, as you get older, you may develop illnesses and disorders as a result of your lifestyle choices. When I hit the age of 50 years old, I suddenly realised that I had a lot of problems which I had been ignoring for a long time. I decided to visit my doctor and seek help. Over the past year, I have worked closely with my doctor to improve my lifestyle and my health. I hope my blog inspires you to do the same.

A Short Guide on Anxiety and Anxiety Counselling.

Grace Henderson

People that suffer from anxiety often experience nervousness, dry mouth, chest pains, fatigue and excessive sweating when confronted with a situation that makes them anxious. Read the extract below to get a better understanding of anxiety and anxiety counselling.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal human reaction to a stressful event. Everyone has been anxious at some point. However, anxiety becomes a disorder when it becomes uncontrollable. For instance, most people are anxious when taking their first flight. However, if you cannot get over your anxiety after a few trips, you probably suffer from flight phobia.

What Can You Do When Anxious?

There are different types of anxiety; hence, you must identify what kind of anxiety you suffer from. For example, social anxiety is when you become anxious in social places. On the other hand, people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) obsess over specific behaviours such as handwashing, shaking hands and cleanliness as a way to avoid unwanted thoughts.

There are several ways to control your anxiety. For example, deep breaths are known to help people remain calm. You could also try some positive thinking. If you are nervous about being in public, concentrate on positive things such as meeting friendly people or enjoying dinner at your favourite restaurant. You could also seek the support of close friends. For instance, a person suffering from flight phobia could ask close friends to accompany him or her on a flight. It helps reduce fear and keeps the anxious person occupied. Physical exercises and therapies, such as yoga and meditation, are also known to reduce anxiety.

What Happens In Anxiety Counselling?

If you cannot control your anxiety, you should seek the help of an anxiety counselling service. There are several interventions that your counsellor can use to treat your anxiety. For example, cognitive behavioural therapy aims to challenge your thought process to help you get over your fears. On the other hand, exposure therapy will subject you to anxiety-causing events. For example, your therapist could ask you to imagine being in a flight or being in public.

Systemic desensitisation will slowly expose you to threatening situations. For example, if you have height phobia, your therapist could show pictures of high places followed by videos. He or she will then ask you to climb a few floors above; and you will be required to climb higher until you overcome your fear.

People suffering from anxiety should not be ashamed of their condition. With a qualified and experienced counsellor, you will overcome your anxiety.
